Learn about four traits that every critical facility manager needs.

Critical Facility Managers (CFMs) who are responsible for data center operations have an essential job that requires a particular set of skills to do their work effectively. Schneider Electric manages data centers of all sizes around the globe, and our CFMs are all carefully hired after ensuring that they have the characteristics needed to operate data centers. Continue reading to learn about four traits that every CFM needs to excel at his/her job.

Running a facility is not an easy job, as CFMs are responsible for the operation of a facility 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. Managers must be dedicated to their work and realize that this is not a typical 9 to 5 job. Instead, they must spend time visiting every room of the data center multiple times a day to ensure everything is running smoothly. Carlos Santiago, a Schneider Electric CFM, says that in his five years of maintaining a data center with his team, they have had zero downtime. This is very important, since our customers have zero tolerance for downtime as they need their facility to be working properly at all hours of the day.

Risk Aversion

Risk aversion is another trait that all CFMs must have, as you don’t want to have any surprises when managing a data center. CFMs must be well-organized and always have a written plan; it’s much easier to be successful when subcontractors in the data center have written procedures to follow. The main goal of data center managers is to mitigate risk, so it makes sense that CFMs must have an aversion to risk!

Extensive Experience

The role of a Critical Facility Manager is not an entry-level position, as all CFMs must have years of experience and training to perform their job effectively. CFMs go through an extensive training program that provides them with the skills, knowledge, and expertise to succeed. The training utilizes years of experience of previous CFMs and everything they’ve learned about effective data center operations. CFMs will always have support from their company, as well as support from quality systems and safety professionals.

Customer-First Attitude

CFMs understand how crucial data centers are to customers’ businesses, and must always have a customer-first attitude to ensure everyone is happy. Customers will expect 100% uptime, and it’s a CFMs duty to ensure they provide this to bring peace of mind to every customer.
