This year, Earth Overshoot Day is on August 1st, and marks the date when we have used more from nature than our planet can renew in a year. In fact, we are using 1.7 Earths, and use more ecological resources than nature can regenerate and emit more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than ecosystems can absorb. What Is #MoveTheDate?
The #MoveTheDate campaign is focused on how we can change the date of Earth Overshoot Day by using less energy and resources, in hopes of one day getting out of global overshoot. While you may think that your personal Footprint doesn’t contribute much to global overshoot, there are many choices you make each day that positively or negatively impact the planet. Some positive steps to help move the date of Earth Overshoot Day are small, such as starting a conversation about population or using reusable materials, but you can also make more significant lifestyle changes, such as eating a plant-based diet. The next time you feel as though your actions don’t affect Earth, think about this: if everyone committed to #MoveTheDate five days a year, the earth could get out of global overshoot by 2050.
Schneider Electric’s EcoStruxure Platform
Schneider Electric believes that global overshoot is reversible, and that adoption of energy efficient and renewable technologies, such as the IoT1-enabled EcoStruxure platform, could move the date of Earth Overshoot Day. Through retrofitting of existing building, industry, and data center infrastructure and upgrading electricity production alone, we believe we could move the date back by 21 days.
The EcoStruxure platform works on three levels to deliver up to 50% energy efficiency and reduce energy costs by 30%. Those levels include connected products, edge control, and apps, analytics, and services:
- Connected Products: Connected sensors and meters improve the efficiency of lighting, heating and air conditioning, while increasing security and optimizing space in a building.
- Edge Control: Users can manage data from IoT connected products on-site, with day-to-day optimization of energy consumption through remote access and advanced automation.
- Apps, Analytics, and Services: Includes visualized reporting on energy consumption through interactive dashboards, detection, and diagnosis of faults. Performance analysis and asset monitoring detect additional energy efficiency opportunities.
