Learn more about the Enoch Pratt Free Library renovation project.

Schneider Electric Buildings Critical Systems was awarded the Enoch Pratt Free Library renovation project in 2016, and the project is now two years into the three-year-long renovation! The library, originally built in 1933, has remained open during the renovation, which is expected to be completed in 2019. Continue reading to learn more about SEBCSI’s role in the renovation and the abundant changes we are providing to the building.

Modernization Of The Historic Landmark

The Enoch Pratt Free Library is a historic Baltimore landmark that can greatly benefit from modern updates. As one of the most popular destinations in Baltimore with over 500,000 visitors per year, renovations were needed to upgrade the facilities and technologies while preserving the historic building. The branch has remained open and plans to stay open for the remainder of the renovation, however, the majority of the first floor is closed to the public due to construction. Detailed restoration of the original design is currently under construction.

Renovation Plans

One of the main goals of the renovation is to add improved spaces to the library, including expanded conference facilities, a career center, a “Creation Stations” space to fuel creative learning. An outdoor patio space will also be added for fundraising and events, as well as a Teen/Young Adult Wing, fully equipped with video and audio recording equipment and a 3D printer. Also, since lighting has a significant effect on workers and occupants, new lighting has been added to replace fluorescent lights, and the building’s large skylight was restored. The renovation also includes design upgrades, as the ceilings are being repainted to match the original artwork and molding as closely as possible.

Schneider Critical System’s Role

SEBCSI has the crucial role of implementing a new building management system with additional building integration. We are providing the turnkey building management system (BMS) featuring our EcoStruxure product line. The library features a skylight cooling system and a finned tube radiation heating system, which will be easily controlled through our BMS solution. The new Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) and life safety systems are an integral addition to the library, as they will ensure all occupants’ safety and will allow all visitors to feel comfortable in every room of the building. SEBCSI is excited to provide Enoch Pratt Free Library with these renovations, and is extremely pleased to be assisting the city of Baltimore.
